Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square is a large square located in the center of Jakarta, Indonesia. Merdeka is the Indonesian word for freedom or independence. Measuring approximately one square kilometer in area, if the surrounding fields within the Merdeka Square are included, it is considered one of the largest squares in the world.

Old Town

Kota Tua Jakarta means, literally, Jakarta Old Town. It is the original downtown settlement of Batavia, founded by the Dutch hundreds of years ago, and was a key port on the spice route through South East Asia. The city rose in importance during the 17th century and over that period became one of the main cities for the Dutch East India Company. What is left today are the remnants of the original walled city built during that period, and the buildings left standing are stark reminders of the Dutch influence of early Jakarta.

GBK (Gelora Bung Karno) City Forest

GBK City Forest offers respite in its soothing embrace. An ideal haven for relaxation or exercise, particularly jogging and walking. Its allure lies in the lush canopy of towering trees that remains remarkably preserved. Imagine reclining beneath the shelter of these trees, caressed by the gentle urban breeze. From this vantage, you’ll also catch sight of the corporate giants lining the Jenderal Sudirman Road, Jakarta’s iconic business district. GBK City Forest welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, between 6 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 6 pm.

TMII (Taman Mini Indonesia Indah)

Popularly known as Taman Mini, it is located in East Jakarta, and consist of 26 exclusive replicas of traditional houses of chieftains found throughout the Indonesian archipelago from Aceh to Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java and Papua. These are pavilions displaying the history, arts and crafts and traditions of each of the provinces. Built for education and family fun, Taman Miini has large areas for family recreation, a number of flora and fauna parks, various museums, performing theatres, an Imax theatre and accommodation facilities.

Here visitors can at a glance view the exceptional breadth and full range of regional architecture in the Indonesian archipelago, where pavilion presents at least three typical examples of each regional style. The “Teater Tanah Airku” is the first theatre in Indonesia equipped with state-of-the art technology. The”Teater Tanah Airku” is a blend between the typical Indonesian and international aesthetics. There are also museums dedicated to rare animals in the Komodo museum, the Asmat museum, a Sports museum, and a museum displaying gifts received by President Soeharto during his thirty years leadership. For nature lovers, there are the orchid gardens, cacti, herbs, and flower gardens, and there is also a Birds Park.

Taman Mini is the brainchild of the late Ibu Tien Soeharto, former Indonesian First Lady. Construction of Taman Mini began in 1971 and it was officially inaugurated on April 20, 1975. The Park has as chief mission the preservation and development of the various Indonesian cultures as a media to strengthen the nation’s unity and integrity and to in still these values especially in the young generation. To further express Indonesia’s tolerance and peaceful coexistence among the different religions in the archipelago here stand in a row the different houses of worship that are still actively used. Istiqlal Mosque

As one of the remarkable buildings that beautify Central Jakarta’s cityscape, the Istiqlal Mosque inspires with its enormity and contemporary design. The building of the mosque covers approximately nine hectares (22 acres) and has five levels in total. Much of the structure is clad in marble from East Java.

The mosque has a large rectangular prayer hall with a 45 meter diameter dome supported by 12 round columns, and has 4 levels of balconies. Its interior is mostly simple but represents the luxury of the mosque itself. The mosque’s main prayer hall will also make you gaze in awe at the beauty of it. There are also four tiers of balconies surrounding the hall of the main prayer hall of Isitiqlal mosque. When looking for the mihrab, a niche that marks the mosque’s closest point to Mecca. There are also some of the Arabic calligraphies, which spell the names of Allah and Muhammed that perfect the beauty of the main prayer hall.

Running from the main hall are a series of arcades connecting to an open-air courtyard. Look up at the soaring minaret, which transmits the call to prayer every day. Located beyond the southern corner of the courtyard are a fountain and pool. The fountain projects water during important Islamic ceremonies and holidays.

Jakarta Cathedral

Jakarta’s Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is officially named Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat ke Surga, meaning the Church of Our Lady of Assumption. A statue of Our Lady Mary stands at the front portal, facing West, with a sentence above the portal saying: “Beatam Me Dicentes omnes Generationes”, meaning: All generations shall call me blessed.

The thick walls are made to support the teak beams to form the roof. The three spires are made from iron frame. These materials were used instead of stone because they are relatively lighter than stone masonry. Above the church are three wrought iron spires, the two highest are 60 meters tall, while the central spire is 45 meters.

Entering the church one sees that the cathedral is designed to form a cross. Its central aisle is 60 meters long and in front of the altars the aisle stretches 10 meters plus 5 meters to each sideThere are three altars. The left is the Altar of Saint Mary which was completed in 1915, and on the right is the Altar of Saint Joseph, completed in 1922. The splendid and most important central altar and tabernacle and the gold cross are said to have been made in the Netherlands in the 19th century and installed here in 1956.

Around the walls of the church are paintings of the Stations of the Cross, where before every Easter, congregations stop to meditate the sufferings of Jesus Christ to his crucifixion until his resurrection from the dead. The Cathedral is still actively used to this day.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in the Nusantara – MACAN Museum) is an art museum in Jakarta. MACAN Museum is an institution that provides public access to a significant and growing collection of modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and around the world. The museum has an active program of exhibitions and events in a 7,100 square meter facility that includes educational and conservation spaces.
